BOP ram providers

Blowout Preventer Rams are key components in well control equipment, mainly used to close the wellhead in an emergency during drilling to prevent blowout accidents. The following is a detailed introduction to BOP Rams:

 1. Ram Types

Blowout Preventer Rams are divided into the following types according to their functions and structures:

Full-sealed Rams:

Used to completely close the empty wellbore (when there is no drill pipe), cut off the wellbore channel, and prevent fluid from rising.

Pipe Rams:

Used to close the annular space around the drill pipe, allowing the wellhead to be sealed when the drill pipe exists, usually matching the drill pipe size.

Shear Rams:

With shearing function, it can cut off pipes such as drill pipes and cables, and then fully close the wellhead (such as in an emergency).

Variable bore rams (VBR):

Can adapt to drill pipes of different diameters, reducing the frequency of replacing rams.

2. Features of Sino Mechanical Blowout Preventer Ram

High-pressure sealing capability:

The working pressure is usually 5000~15000 psi (34.5~103.5 MPa), and high-temperature and high-pressure wells can reach higher levels.

The elastic sealing rubber core (such as nitrile rubber, fluororubber) is used to seal with the metal ram to adapt to high pressure and corrosive fluids in the well.

Quick closing response:

Hydraulic drive can complete closing within seconds, and can be operated by accumulator or manual backup system in emergency.

Resistant to extreme environments:

The material needs to withstand the temperature range of -50°C~200°C, and the hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) environment requires sulfur-resistant steel (such as NACE MR0175 standard).

Shearing capacity (full-closed ram):

Some rams are designed to be shear-type and can cut drill pipes (e.g., 5⅝-inch drill pipes require about 1.5 million pounds of shearing

Automatic mud cleaning function: Scrape the mud on the surface of the drill bit when closing to ensure the sealing surface is clean.

Locking device: Hydraulic locking or manual mechanical locking to prevent accidental opening of the ram under long-term high pressure.

Redundant design: Deepwater BOP groups (such as offshore drilling) are equipped with multiple sets of rams to ensure failure backup.

3. Working principle of Blowout Preventer Ram

Hydraulic drive: The ram is pushed by the hydraulic system of the blowout preventer and closes quickly within seconds.

Sealing mechanism: The front end of the ram is equipped with an elastic sealing rubber core (such as polyurethane material), which is squeezed and deformed to form a seal when closed.

Locking device: Some rams are designed with a mechanical locking mechanism to maintain long-term sealing pressure.

3. Blowout Preventer Application scenarios

Conventional well control: When a kick is detected, the ram is manually or automatically activated to close the wellhead.

Emergency: If a blowout is out of control (Blowout), the shear ram can cut the pipe and completely seal the wellbore.

Deepwater drilling: Deepwater blowout preventers (BOP) are usually equipped with multiple sets of rams, and the redundant design improves safety.

4. Technical standards of Blowout Preventer Ram

API specifications: Comply with API 16A (Blowout preventer design standards) and API 53 (Well control system operation).

Pressure level: Commonly 2000 psi, 5000 psi, 10000 psi or even 15000 psi (selected according to well depth and pressure).

Temperature level: Adapt to high temperature environment (such as -50°C to +200°C).

Regular testing: Pressure testing and functional testing are carried out according to API 16A/53 standards.

Material certification: Seals must pass API 6A certification, and sulfur-resistant materials meet NACE requirements.

5. Blowout Preventer Ram considerations

Matchability: The ram size must match the drill pipe and casing size.

Operation training: Personnel must be familiar with the ram switching sequence and emergency procedures.

Redundant design: Deepwater BOPs are usually equipped with multiple sets of rams (such as more than 4 sets) to deal with failures.
